Review Details

With their superior portability and high performance, Gaming laptops are becoming popular by the day in the gaming world. Gaming laptops offer great functionality for those who like to be portable, while not lacking on performance.
ASUS G50 laptop scores full marks when it comes to looks; the black body highlighted with bright orange accents is enough to make others envy the user. To add to the style, the lid is decorated with big Republic of Gamers Logo with blue backlighting. Along the sides there are LED indicators that can be programmed to glow constantly or blink faster when the CPU/Memory load increases.
This laptop has a big 15.6 inch display. The LED backlit display produces crisp and vibrant visuals, making the whole game playing experience better. One thing that will create a slight problem is the glossy coating on the screen that maximises reflections. This laptop also features a 2MP webcam along with array microphones.
Keeping in mind that a laptop takes a lot of beating, , the overall build quality of this laptop is quite good. The laptop has reinforced hinges along with a Mag-Alloy roll cage to protect its internal components in case of an accidental fall.
This laptop features a full sized keyboard with numeric keypad. Overall the build quality and feel of the keyboard is quite good. The keys are large and are spaced out well. One point of concern is that the scroll keys are slightly smaller as compared to other keys.
The touchpad is big and sensitive .The touchpad also features a blue backlit border to help users locate it if playing in the dark. It adds to style as well. The laptop also includes a customised ‘Republic of Gamers’ Logitech MX 518 optical Gaming mouse for those who love FPS games or don’t like using touchpad.
The G50 features Dolby Home Theatre certified stereo Altec Lansing speakers that create enough quality surround sound, but for those of you who like the big sound, you can connect your surround sound speakers with the 5.1 Ch sound output of this notebook. Even if sometimes you have to be sober and you cannot turn on the speakers, you can still enjoy the full gaming experience with the bundled Siberia Steelseries Gaming Headphones.
Along with all this, the G50 supports one touch over clocking. Actually it has three performance modes tailored to fit most scenarios easily. There is not much of a difference between Normal and Turbo mode but once you activate the Turbo extreme mode you can easily notice a difference of 5-10 FPS in most games.
As far as the performance of this laptop on our benchmarks is concerned, it scored a total of 6814 Marks in PC mark 05 which benchmarks overall PC performance is various usage scenarios like OS loading time, Multitasking and web usage and 6661 marks in 3D Mark06 as opposed to score of 7683 in PC Mark 05 and 12735 marks in 3D Mark 06 by Dell XPS 1730 reviewed in DIGIT (Dec 2008). But considering the fact at that this machine comes at almost half the price that of Dell XPS 1730, it is not a bad deal.

Although the laptop that we got supports a max resolution of 1440 x 900 which is a bit less, as gaming laptops these days are coming with full HD resolution. It flawlessly played games like Doom 3, NFS PRO Street, and also Alone in the dark (which comes as a free bundle with this laptop) at Max resolution. While benchmarking, this laptop achieved a frame rate of 102.67 FPS in Doom 3 at 1440 x 900 resolution at medium settings, not at all bad for a gaming laptop.
Heating is always a big point of concern for a gaming laptop, but this should not concern anybody while buying G50, thanks to its superior heat management. I almost kept playing NFS Pro Street for more than 6 hours but there was not even a little sign of heating on the palm rest or the keyboard or anywhere on the upper side. The base although gets hot after playing for long hours, but practically one is not supposed to keep a big machine like this on the lap while playing.
For Wire free connectivity this laptop has the latest Intel Wi-Fi link 5100 supporting 802.11 b/g/n which is capable of giving up to a max data transfer rate of up to 450 Mb/s (With compatible hardware), and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. But still because of other constraints Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology falls short on data transfer rate as compared to wired connectivity. .
While this laptop is not at all meant for power saving, it’s still based on power efficient yet powerful Centrino 2 platform with a P8600 Intel C2D processor running at 2.4 GHz having a 1066 MHz FSB. In short it has a fast processor that runs on latest technology for laptops.
Battery backup is what most of the potential buyers will not be bothered, considering the fact that it is a performance laptop, but still this laptop has impressive figures to throw with its stock 6 cell battery. It showed a max backup of 37 minutes while playing games and a backup time of 1 hour and 2 minutes while watching a movie at 70 % brightness. Not bad at all, right?
Well, with the price tag of 1, 00,000 rupees, ASUS G50 comes as a mixed bag of goodies. With so many BYOC (Bring your own computer) events happening these days, this is a must have for those who love style, performance, and portability. But before you plan to join the line of buyers, you must know that for the same price you can get a much superior performing desktop. So what do you value more- superior portability and style or superior performance at a given price point? Choice is entirely yours.
