Battery backup is one of the key things for a notebook. Most people strongly believe that battery backup is only affected by the number of cells in your battery. Which is true, but at the same time there some easy things you can do to ensure that you get the most out of your notebook battery. Here are some options.

  1. Reduce the brightness:-
Display alone consumes more battery than the rest of your laptop. So if you need to increase the battery backup time it is a good idea to reduce the brightness of your display. Reduce the brightness to a level where you are comfortable and it does not strain your eyes.

  2. Remove external devices:-
External devices like an external hard disc drive or your internet data card or even you flash drives, all require power to function, which is drawn from your notebook. As long as you are connected to a power source it isok to use these but while your laptop is on battery, try minimizing the usage of external devices.

  3. No multi tasking: -
If you are working on many applications at the same time on your laptop, the memory and CPU usage increases.  This in turn increases the power requirement of your laptop.  Close any applications you aren’t using. It is more efficient to run a single application at a time, then close it and open a new one when you want to work on something else.

  4. Reduce the performance:-
If you have to do general computing while travelling then you don’t need high performance. So to make your laptop utilize the battery in the best possible manner keep your laptop on balanced or battery saver mode. You can change the power settings by clicking the battery icon on the task bar and then selecting power saver or balanced from the options.

  5. Switch off wireless
Every laptop today features wireless connectivity, and wireless radios consume energy. Be it Bluetooth or Wi-Fi everything requires power, so be choosy about what you want and switch off the unwanted. Most laptops come with a dedicated button exactly for this reason. Besides the battery it would also ensure that your notebook is more secure.
