Netbooks are seemingly on their way to invade the laptop market. With minimal processing power, viewing space and ease of mobility, attributed to their light weight, they are also economically priced to fit just anyone's bill .Not to mention, Netbooks are primarily designed for net based applications and need to be delicately handled, or else they might have trouble standing up to the daily use and abuse.

Here are a few simple adjustments that you can do with the settings and installed applications of your netbook to greatly enhance it’s performance.

  • Set Windows for optimum performance :
    • You may love the the effects of windows XP, but this has an adverse effect on the overall performance of your Netbook. So it is always advisable to set your windows for optimum performance. For checking or changing the settings, go to the Control Panel >Click on the Performance and Maintenance link > Select 'Pick a task' under 'Adjust visual effects' link > Select 'Adjust for best performance' radio button > Press OK
  • Upgrade your RAM :
    • Netbooks come with only 1GB of RAM. Thanks to the limitations laid by Microsoft! The manufacturers cannot have 2GB or more RAM even if they desire so. But this limitation is only imposed on the manufacturers, through a license. It does not apply to you. So go ahead, buy more RAM and install it.
  • Get a bigger battery pack :
    • If you are a frequent traveler, get hold of batteries with higher capacity. However, if you are averse to spending extra cash, then select models with a hi-cap battery, for instance Asus Eee PC 1000HE or Samsung NC10. These should last around 4-7.5 hours between charging.
  • Remove the unused Applications :
    • The more the number of icons you see on the lower right hand side of your task bar, the slower your system gets. Keep a constant check on the applications, running on your computer and un-install the ones that you rarely use . You can also close them, when not in use.
  • Get an external Drive :
    • Netbooks don’t have optical drives and there are times when you need them the most. Luckily, the prices of USB based drives have reduced considerably. Having an external optical drive would always come handy, for data transfer or simply, accessing files from an external device like CDs and DVDs

These simple adjustments and installations will help you a great deal in improving the overall performance of your Netbook.
