How 3D Works

3D imaging, also known as stereoscopy, is a technique of creating the illusion of the image depth by presenting two different images, viewed by the left and the right eye individually by the viewer. Originally, these distinct images are 2D images that are combined by the brain to give the perception of 3D depth. Stereoscopy is attained using certain various approaches.

The user can view two separate images that are created by 2 different sources, which can be viewed as one single image by wearing glasses. The other way is that the user wear the eyeglasses to filter and view the offset images from a single source that get separated to each eye or in another way have the light source split the images directly into the viewer eyes where no glasses are required (known as Autostereoscopy).

There are certain aspects of how a 3D image is perceived using glasses. Depending upon the light source the images that are created that are viewed as two different images but the human braincreates it as one single image. To create that kind of illusion we use glasses, and there are two types of 3D technology on which these glasses are based upon, one being Active shutter.

Active shutter is nothing but a compact sized LCD screens that dim their light of the left and right lenses, alternatively in succession. They are completely controlled by the infrared signal emitter integrated within the TV that signals each lens to dim each lens, so that the eye can see the image intended for it. Active shutter is fairly complicated and so it is inexpensive. Active shutter runs on a battery and that is why they are heavy are not among the most preferred for 3D viewing.

Another, way of perceiving a 3D image is using the Passive 3D glasses, which is similar to polarized sunglasses. Unlikely, they are designed to create an illusion of depth by blocking the light equally from both eyes and evidently polarized 3D glasses blocks distinctive lights from each eye. The use of Passive 3D glasses should be possible only by using propriety infrared emitter to be able to synchronize with the glasses. But considering its use the only niggle one should face is that since each lens is deferring light that doesn’t allow any 1080p video to create its full capable image for individual eye but your brain will perceives it as a Full HD video when it is put together.

With such complex methods but rather simple execution just by the use of such hi-tech polarized glasses you could get an unrealistic experience of watching 3D movies or playing 3D Games. When we move ahead with time, we experience certain limitations to 3D viewing specially while using the active or passive glasses. Such limitations that sometimes become hindrances while watching any 3D content.

1. For movies and television, the lack of parallax shift head movement may prove to be the most important deficiency, overall.

2. Using the computer monitors or hand held game devices induce most serious visual conflict because the focal plane is not shifting with the object that createsdepth due to minimal movement of the head.

3. Standard 2D viewing simultaneously cannot be combined with Stereo 3D.
