LED or Light emitting Diodes are probably the next best thing that can be used inside a flat panel TV for display illumination. And due to their numerous advantages over conventional illumination, most LCD and Plasma manufacturers are looking at it as the perfect medium to replace CFL based lighting.

LED’s unlike conventional illumination mediums are smaller and brighter, thus helping in making displays brighter and slimmer which today most of the users ask for. Another factor associated with LEDs is that the operational temperature of a LED is much lower than that of a a CFL and therefore it  can be cooled inside a smaller area and with a lesser number of breather holes and thus  help in saving the displays from gathering dust which is probably the biggest problem in countries like India.

There are speculations about newer displays being built on a totally new laser based technology, also known as the Laser TVs , but it’s a long way to go before even LED based displays become a common feature and gain critical mass.
