Lemon iT 717 - Fiddle with the jack of all trades
The Lemon iT 717 is a dual SIM touchscreen phone targeted at the tech savy user and comes loaded with a bunch of attractive features. The overall build quality of the phone is very good making it quite durable. Its solid plastic body which has a brushed metallic finish on the back panel , the metallic lining that runs across the contours and the glossy LCD screen ,all together make the phone look more stylish and attractive.
The phone has three buttons below the LCD screen- Call receive ,select function button in the centre and call disconnect button. The buttons that control the volume are on the left side of the phone and the USB port is located at the bottom of the phone. The battery compartment has a sliding cover and on removing the cover reveals 2 GSM SIM slots and one micro SD memory card slot. The phone comes with a mobile pouch which is a value added accessory.
The menu interface of the phone is well organised and simple to use. The lack of a hardware keypad can definitely be felt because the touch screen of the phone is slow and inaccurate. However , there is a QWERTY touchscreen keypad available , but the narrow spacing between the keys contradicts the benefit that a QWERTY interface could have provided. Maybe the manufacturers were expecting such complications and thus to overcome them, the phone comes with a stylus. But , the stylus is also not very impressive and its one hand operation requires time to get used to.
The phone comes loaded with some interesting applications like answering machines, image editor and photo viewer. The phone’s camera can also be used as a web cam , when the phone is connected to a PC or laptop through a USB port. It also incorporates the Media Transfer Protocol storage technology which allows the user to have restrictive access to certain transferred files with the use of passwords and permissions.
PERFORMANCE
The results of the signal reception and call clarity tests were modest.When exposed to a noisy atmosphere, there was evidence of edgy background noise in Zone two. However , the incorporated noise isolation technology in the handsfree handset did a good job of refining the background noise and gave a boost to the overall call clarity. Also , the voice clarity of the built in loud speaker was uneven and wavering , thereby providing a mediocre experience.
There were no call drops and throughout the call , the speaker volume was optimal. The phone gave a modest performance in the Bluetooth test at a transfer speed of 52HB/s. The performance of the video capture test was very poor as there were distorted images due to pixelated artifacts. The video playback test exhibited stuttering and visible grains, thereby making it an unsatisfying experience. Overall, an average performance in all the tests and an ordinary performance in the captured photo quality test was a major disappointment.
Verdict
The Lemon iT 717 is a good social networking phone with a rich set of features. However , it cannot be labelled as a good performer. At Rs 5995, the phone is a good buy only if you are willing to give up on performance for more features. Micromax X550 Qube is a definitely a better performer in this price segment.
