Review Details

The first thing that you will notice about the Samsung Galaxy S is its beautiful 4-inch Super AMOLED screen. The second aspect that jumps at you about the phone is how thin-and-light it is. Put together, the phone comes across as something from the future; in a marketplace crowded with big, heavy, LCD-driven phones.


It comes with the most powerful graphic processor inside a mobile phone, and a now standard 1GHz processor. What the phone doesn’t offer is a dedicated keyboard.

 

 


The processors, the RAM and the screen all make for a very fast, responsive unit. Occasionally, the phone chugs to load something – pausing an eternal 5-8 seconds at a black screen before showing you what it is supposed to. Samsung Kies – the phone’s companion PC software also has its share of issues.


The Samsung Galaxy S is powered by Google’s Android 2.1 operating system. The phone ships with some custom apps and UI, which do a good job of adding functionality to the base OS. However, the phone makes a few bizarre missteps – for example, it doesn’t let you assign specific ringtones to your Google Contacts (only to contacts stored in the phone’s memory); it also has trouble integrating contact information from Google, Facebook, and Twitter.


On the whole, the phone’s software integration seems a bit unfinished, and ultimately lets the excellent hardware down. If you are ok with that, the Samsung Galaxy S will please you for the most part.
