Review Details The Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini launched in 2010 had loads of problems and was definitely not the best smartphone around. However Sony Ericsson developers have tweaked the previous version changed a few things and has come up with an improved version of the product. Look & Feel
The Xperia Mini is bigger than its predecessor. The previous model supported a 2.55 inch display whereas the latest model supports a 3 inch screen which makes it more comfortable to use.
The top panel supports the power key and has an LED Notification. The USB Port and 3.5 mm Audio jack are placed on the bottom panel. The cover on the USB Port is good. However they are placed very close to each other making it difficult to use simultaneously. The camera key is placed on the right side along with the volume rocker. The chrome strip is available on the right as well as the left panel.
The 5 MP Camera with LED flash is on the rear panel. The phone has a nice rubberized finish which is good considering the tiny form factor. The battery cover is a little disappointing as it has a side pulling mechanism. It is a little uncomfortable and may snap if you are not careful with it. The phone is very comfortable to use even with one hand and has a premium build quality.
Features
It supports a 1GHz processor with 512 MB RAM which is good considering the price bracket. It supports the latest Android Gingerbread 2.3 OS which is not available in other phones in this price range. The display is quite comfortable to use. It supports the Bravia Engine display which is available in the Xperia Arc as well.
You have the timescape UI which allows you to set four icons in four clusters and five home screens to spread the widgets around. The Timescape UI supports Facebook and Twitter connectivity.
Performance
It has the 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8255 Snapdragon processor with 512MB of RAM. It offers good performance with in this price category. It doesn’t get bogged down when we install apps on it, and only slightly slower when you have a bunch of apps running in the background. But then again, background apps do cause all phones to become a bit sluggish, even the really high-end ones. However, what helps the Xperia Mini is the UI isn't as heavy as the HTC Sense. No wonder HTC phones tend to become sluggish under the same usage scenario we put this through.
It has a 3.0-inch LED Backlit display with 320x480 pixels screen resolution, while the screen size has been increased slightly it still falls under the tiny smartphone category. The increase in screen size makes texting a lot easier. The display is crisp, and despite the small size, we were impressed by how well text was handled. Camera performance is not very good. Images are not very crisp, and lack the detailing we expected from a camera in this price category.
Battery Life lasts a day and a half, from full charge to complete discharge. Well, the usage included quite a few voice calls, constant connectivity to either Wi-Fi or EDGE and the inevitable WhatsApp chats. It is a1200mAh battery.
Our Take
Priced at just over Rs 13k, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini is definitely worth considering and offers good performance. The build quality has also improved from its predecessor. The specifications offered are better than its competitors- 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM and Android 2.3. If you are looking for a small smartphone this is the phone for you.
