Review Details

The HCL ME X1 Tablet is an affordable tablet meant for basic activities such as web browsing, mail, videos and the occasional game from the Google Play Store.

 
Look and Feel
 
The device is quite well built with a grey plastic body and looks like a unibody design. The front of the device has a 7-inch display with 480x800 pixels display resolution. It supports a 2MP camera with a back button for video calling. The connectivity ports like USB port, mini HDMI out, a headphones jack, microSD card slot, DC in and the power button are well laid out in the bottom of the device.
 
On the top of the device has a rocker that works as a menu, home button as well as a volume rocker. The Me Tablet X1 tablet weighs just 391.5gms.  The Tablet looks average with similar looks and style like all the other tablets available in this price range.
 
Features and Performance
 
It supports Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS but HCL has removed access to the Google Play Store on the device and given you access to the HCL Me app store instead. You don’t have access to most apps and we found the interface boring and dull. If you want to install an app the device will ask you three times before downloading and installing an app. It feels quite frustrating and we hope HCL adds the Google Play store in addition to its own store soon.
 
The device is powered by a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU with 512MB RAM and a capacitative touch screen display. We found the response sluggish of the touchscreen and the performance improved marginally after we installed a task killer. We played Angry Birds Rio and it ran pretty smoothly. The Browsing experience on the web was a mixed experience and the change in orientation from portrait to landscape was swift but we found that the pages took a little too long to render. It was easy to zoom once the page was loaded and the text wrapped quite well. The overall web browsing experience of the tablet was good.
 
The YouTube app available on the HCL app store is disappointing and we had to download a mobile version of the video-sharing site to watch videos and ran smoothly but the audio was very soft. The HCL Me Tablet X1 supports 1080p video playback and two 1080p trailers in .MP4 format on the device ran smoothly. The display was very crisp but the viewing angles were underwhelming. The device has a 2MP camera with 1600 × 1200 pixels display resolution. The images from the camera are very average. The front facing camera shoots 640 × 480 pixels display resolution.
 
The device supports a mini USB to full USB adaptor and is compatible to 3G dongles. The device lasts under a day with average use. The file manager is preinstalled in the device and helps you seamlessly locate files that you have transferred from your computer onto the device. The HCL Me Tablet X1 supports a APK Installer that helps install and uninstall apps with ease.
 
Verdict
 
Overall, the HTC Me Tab X1 is an average performer and the lack of Google Play store is the biggest disappointment of the device. It lacks Bluetooth and there is no SIM card slot that is available in other devices in this price range. The 1080p MP4 playback is very smooth as well as Angry Birds Rio. If you are looking for a tablet under 10k this device will be a good choice.
